RSS Administration

RSS feed iconThere really isn't much to do as an administrator - if a module provides RSS feeds, you may find an option in the module's preferences to enable or disable the RSS feeds. Be sure you enable it!

If you have a module that does not provide RSS feeds and you want to provide a feed for that module, you will need something else to help you provide that feed. RSSFit by Brandycoke is one module that does just that. If you are using some of the more modern modules, most are being released with RSS features built in.

Subscribing to RSS (Users)

Users will need to have an RSS reader in order to subscribe to the feeds from your site. There are many ways to do this - most browsers have added this capability, most of the portal sites (Google, Yahoo! and MSN) allow you to add feeds to your custom home page and there are separate RSS readers available to bring the feeds to your desktop without having to open your browser. For Mac users (OSx), there is NetNewsWire Lite, for Windows users there is Feedreader, and there is AmphetaDesk, that is cross-platform.

Your readers may need some help identifying and subscribing to your RSS feeds, so be sure to

  1. Let them know the feeds are available
  2. Clearly identify the feeds on your site
  3. Provide instructions for subscribing, or link to instructions elsewhere

The other thing you will need to do is keep your feeds fresh! Subscribers expect there to be fresh content on  a fairly frequent basis, if there isn't, they unsubscribe and don't come back.
