What Do People Read?

They'll Read Other People's Content

One of the ways you can add a Bible feature to your web site is to link to content published by another source, either as an RSS feed or some other means.

Of course, reusing content someone else has created requires less work on your part, but if the feed isn't working, is changed or is discontinued, you lose the content on your site, too. There are several well-established organizations that publish feeds you can use on your site, start by checking with your own denomination's sites, or even your synod or archdiocese may have something. Other options are sites like Biblegateway.com, YouVersion.com and the International Bible Society. Or, you can do a search for 'daily Bible reading rss' to get about 423,000 results to different pages offering feeds you can add to your web site. While this method is fairly simple to implement, does offer your readers some daily Bible readings, it doesn't always fit your situation. And, if they can get the same somewhere else, why would they visit your site instead? If, after reading the rest of this article and prayerfully considering what is best at this time for your site, you decide to use this method, the steps are pretty simple.

Method 1: Embedding Custom HTML

  1. Sign in with administrator privileges and go to the administration area
  2. Click on Blocks and then click on Add New Block (in ImpressCMS), or scroll down to the new block form (in XOOPS)
  3. Type the title of the new block and select the placement on your page
  4. Copy the code provided by the site generating the content you will be using into the content area for the block. You may also want to add some information above or below the pasted content - maybe even work in the word "Bible" somewhere
  5. Select the type of content for the block (most likely it will be HTML)
  6. Save the block
  7. Go back to the user area and see your new block

This will give you a custom block you can display in any area of your site.

Method 2: Displaying an RSS Feed

  1. Find a site that provides the content you like as an RSS feed
  2. You will need to have a module that can 'aggregate' RSS feeds, like Planet or  d3pipes
  3. Add the feed you have selected to the module's list of feeds
  4. Go back to the user area and see your new feed

This will give you a feed in the main page for your feed module and possibly a block you can use anywhere on your site.
