Is It Time to Add a Calendar to Your Site?

The Methods

Before you reach this point, you should already have a pretty good idea how you are going to use the module - what categories you will use, who will be able to view each category, who will be able to submit events and who will be able to approve event submissions.

Now that you have a calendar module installed the real work begins! How will you add all the events you deem important to your new online calendar?

I suggest you become familiar with all the methods for adding and maintaining your events - create individual events and recurring events and edit them. Test your group permissions for viewing, editing and approving. Then venture into the advanced capabilities of piCal (if you have installed that module) found in the administration area. There you will find the Event Manager, where you can filter the events in your calendar and add or remove them from categories, or delete them completely. You can also import events from an ical file, either one you upload from your local computer, or a published calendar online.

Finding special event calendars online is very easy and there are many available that might fit with your ministry's goals - I have found calendars with lectionaries, Bible reading plans, Christian observances and feast days. You can find many just by searching - one site, in particular, specializes in sharing calendars. iCalShare.com has over 2,700 calendars organized by category. Other organizations also provide calendars for downloading in ical format.

With some thought and prayerful planning, event calendars can be a successful part of your church's web site. If you have found creative ways to integrate calendars on your church web site, or have a success story to share, be sure to let us know.
